The boring bit

When you give your horse or pony a wormer you are giving them a pharmaceutical chemical whose use is controlled by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate.  To sell a wormer you have to be trained and registered as a suitable qualified person by the Animal Medicines Training and Regulatory Authority.

This is not the same as buying a supplement or choosing which feed to give your horse.

The majority of people responsible for horses and ponies in this country are aware of the seriousness of worm infestation and the importance of using wormers.  However they do not ascertain the extent of worms in their horse or pony before giving the chemicals and so do not know whether they are giving the horse the treatment it needs or whether they are helping the worms by giving the chemicals that they need to develop resistance.

The fantasy bit

It is a bit like not being sure if you are going to have a headache today and taking an aspirin every morning just in case.  The morning you do have the headache the aspirin won’t work because your body will be so used to it and so you will have to switch to a different, maybe stronger chemical.  This continues until there are no more chemicals to switch to and you have to live with a permanent headache.

The reality bit

It is common practise to treat all horses on a yard with the same wormer at the same time, and there are some situations where this is absolutely the correct thing to do but is yours one of them?  Do you know how to find out if it is?  In a yard of 20 horses maybe two or three have worms.  Why would the owners of 17 horses pay for an intensive worming program just because of the horses that carry the worms.  Surely it makes more sense to get rid of the worms from the three horses and monitor the others with worm egg counts, to stop the spread of resistance and also to reduce the cost of worming.

Modern research, testing and improved management means that we can now identify the animals at risk from worms and treat them individually rather than treating them all simply as a precaution.
