Medium Risk Situations

A medium risk environment is one where the horse MAY be taking in worm larvae when he is grazing in the paddock / field, or he has a worm burden that needs treating.  This is most likely in the situations detailed below.  If your horse is kept in a medium risk environment then it requires a chemical monitoring program, which includes targeted chemical/herbal treatment and monitoring with worm egg counts.

The aim with a medium risk grading is to reduce it to low within 12 to 18months.  This can be achieved with an Intelligent Worming Strategy Review and Program Design.

Small DIY livery yards, etc

If your horse is on a small DIY livery yard then by assessing which horses have worms and treating them accordingly it will be possible to move the whole yard to a low risk grading.

Horses with a positive worm egg count reading

If the horse is kept in a low risk environment but has a positive worm egg count reading then it will require targeted chemical treatment to address the worm burden.  This horse will be on a separate worming program to the rest of the yard.

Horses kept at home with no dung collection

If your horse is kept at home then it should be graded as low risk.  However if the dung is not collected and if it already has worms it will be constantly re infecting itself.

New horses

New horses are unknown and should always be treated initially with chemicals to address any historic worm burden that they may bring with them.  We offer a new horse starter pack in our shop to make sure the horse or pony is protected from Day One of your ownership.

A medium risk grading is a half way house.  The benefits of the low risk grading are within reach but a short targeted chemical program is required to achieve them.

There are many financial and health benefits to having an Intelligent Worming Program Review if your risk grading is medium.  Our consultants will proactively manage the reduction of worms in your yard, horses or ponies.
