Wormers are a chemical whose supply is controlled by legislation and the Veterinary Medicines Directorate. Any individual who sells wormers has to be a qualified person with the Animal Medicines Trade Regulatory Authority. There are a number of safety guidelines that should be followed when worming and applying flea treatment.
Due to the possible infection of toxocara canis in children it is especially important to understand how to worm your pets correctly and what preventative measures you can take to prevent infection to children. This is a responsibility of all dog owners.
Worming and flea control best practise
- Worm your dog, cat, kittens and puppies using a reliable, proven wormer
- Ensure that you know the weight of your pet. Underdosing is not effective in the removal of worms
- Do not store above 25 degrees C
- Part used tablets should always be discarded
- Do not use after the expiry date
- Always wash your hands after handling a wormer or flea treatment
- Keep away from children
- Use preventative measures to ensure that children are nor infected
- Ensure they always wash their hands before eating
- Encourage them to avoid sucking dirty fingers
- Don’t allow children to play on the ground and eat at the same time
- Be sure that floors are clean where children play
- Don’t leave young children unsupervised with a pet
- Fence round play areas to exclude dogs
- Cover sandpits to keep out cats
- Do not let your dog foul public play areas
- Always clear up pet faeces immediately, especially in public places
- Train cats to use a litter tray
- Always worm pregnant bitches and queens 10 days prior to whelping
- Start worming puppies and kittens at two weeks of age as they can be born with worms
- Ensure that you treat your pet for fleas on a regular basis
- Use a flea treatment on the pet’s bedding and the house carpets at the same time as treating the animal
- If you use a spray flea treatment it can be harmful to birds, fish, turtles and other aquatic life. Always remove from the room before spraying
- Do not let your dog eat raw sheep’s meat and offal
- Worming should be carried out two to four times a year
- Bitches should be treated 30 days after every season
- Tapeworm infestations will re occur unless flea treatment is carried out in addition to worming
- Increased dosing is required for the control of lungworm, clinical infestations and Giardia spp. Consult your vet for guidelines on this.
